The exhibition: Held in the UK's most intact medieval monastic buildings, Durham Cathedral’s “Open Treasure”, showcases over 2,000 years of historically, architecturally and religiously significant events and artefacts, including the presentation of the Cathedral’s internationally-important treasures.
The designs: Using projections, touchscreens, CGI, films and databases, ay-pe was tasked with providing nine audio visuals, pieces of software and interactives to help visitors explore and understand the development and impact of Christianity in the north east, from earliest times to the present day.
The project: The digital experiences of Open Treasures needed to engage visitors of all ages, in a modern way, with the significance of the exhibition; providing a lasting impact and encouraging a connection with the faith and passion of the exhibition, long after a visit had ended.
ST CUTHBERT'S COFFIN & TREASURES: 3D Wireframe graphics, illustration, Peppers Ghost, Archival research, story telling
EXHIBIT'S STORY: St Cuthbert, his story and the pilgrimages surrounding his death, makes his Coffin, which dates back to AD698, a historically, socially and religiously, highly significant item. The coffin though, is incomplete and faded, with its surviving pieces presented on a black replica of the original coffin box shape.
Open Treasures wanted to bring the background, story and significance of this item to life in front of the visitors eyes, without harming this important artefact.
VISITOR EXPERIENCE: A 'Pepper's Ghost' reflection from inside the display case, seemingly on the original coffin (but in fact avoiding and preserving it) allows the visitor to absorb the story, beauty and detail of the complete coffin, through moving 3D wireframe graphic and text above and around the artefact.
Faded, broken and lost images of saints, angels and symbols originally carved into the coffin are tastefully traced out in front of the visitor. The 3D graphics also name each carving, cite its relevance and explain other important artefacts found in the coffin. Visually stimulated, the visitor leaves with a lasting appreciation of the coffin, it’s significance and the surrounding legacy of St Cuthbert himself.
BENEDICTINE RULE INTERACTIVE TOUCHSCREENS: 3D Illustration, animation, archival research, storytelling, game-play, touchscreen software
EXHIBIT'S STORY: Durham Cathedral was home to many Benedictine Monks for several centuries. Alongside their religious missions and practices, they also carried out various practical roles, under various Rules, which impacted and benefited the growth of the area. The Benedictine Monk exhibit needed to convey content and information to the visitor on these important purposes, activities and rules, in a fun, memorable interactive which also left the visitor with a sense of what that period in history felt and looked like.
VISITOR EXPERIENCE: Featuring bespoke animations and illustrations based on Latin monastic manuscripts, these colourful, fun, touchscreen interactives engage visitors of all ages in the types of roles, daily activities and responsibilities of various Durham Cathedral Benedictine monks.
After selecting a monk character, the visitor swipes through carefully researched content giving a broad view of a monk’s life in a light-hearted, easy-to-absorb series of designs and animations. The visitor leaves the interactive with a better knowledge of the lives and purposes of the Benedictine monks who collectively ran the Cathedral and influenced society and religion across the north east.
‘STONE COLLECTION’ DIGITAL LABEL INTERACTIVE: A searchable label and information database of the extensive stone collection, including filmed expert interviews.
‘PILGRIMAGE’ INTERACTIVE (CMS INTERACTIVE): Community interactive where visitors input their 'pilgrimage' information, which then appears on a large-scale map alongside other 'pilgrim' stories, conveying a sense of Cathedral pilgrimage.
‘‘BUILD YOUR OWN PILGRIM BADGE’ INTERACTIVE: Fun interactive were visitors choose from a selection of images in order to build and share their own pilgrim badge.
