Following recent exciting developments and project wins, AY-PE is currently looking to expand the team with the following role: Motion Designer (Film, Motion & Graphic Designer) We welcome applications from those seeking employment or freelance work. Could you be our next designer to help create our jaw-dropping AV for museums and attractions?

Main responsibilities:

Design AV for museum and heritage attractions clients, buildings and their target visitors.


Create, design, produce, facilitate or deliver part of, or whole, digital media pieces in the areas of film, motion and graphic design which could include but aren’t limited to short films, animations, motion text and typography, touchscreen interactive user interfaces, asset edits (eg archive film, stills), soundscapes and more. 


Work alongside and take direction from the Creative Director and ensure AY-PE standards are adhered to.


Work on a range of complex and fast-paced projects, balancing time and remaining organised, calm and in control under pressure.


Assess project briefs with team to establish and create initial pitch presentation ideas and creative/technical concepts.


Work to client briefs and AY-PE creative direction, evolving design work as appropriate to fit peer and client feedback.


Produce written and visual documentation, clips and AV pieces from concept to delivery, using mood boards, story boards, mock-ups, content logs, moving samples and more


Awareness of the tools and people available to achieve the production goal.


Brief / manage skill specific freelancers where required.


Regularly update and manage projects through AY-PEs recording systems.


Ensure project milestones and delivery dates are met.


Occasional support of live film productions, shoots and voice over recordings.


Create, edit and encode AV content.


Attend and present at client pitches, meetings, workshops and site install where required.


Deliver high quality, creative and engaging designs which also follow client / AY-PE / industry guidelines or best practice eg incorporate inclusivity/ access requirements, work to exhibition brand guidelines etc.


Be deeply user-focused in all AV creations.


Take informed design decisions which strike the balance between creative, practical and commercial thinking.


Ensure that all work is delivered on-time and within budget.


Undertake any other role relevant tasks as requested from time to time.


Travel from time to time with members of the AY-PE team to sites/ client locations.



Required Qualification/ Experience:

3 – 5 years demonstrable experience within a relevant studio/ agency/ production environment delivering creative audio-visual pieces.


Excellent knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite programmes, with emphasis on Premiere Pro/After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator.


Experience managing and designing in complex and high profile AV / digital software projects.


Strong understanding of typography and use of colour.


Demonstrable experience of designing user interfaces for kiosk, mobile or web.


Experience treating and editing archive footage and stills as well as newly filmed footage.


Experience concepting and creating new films from existing footage archive and stills, combined with new motion GFX and graphic treatments.


Experience of concepting, briefing  and editing sound design to fit films including SFX, voiceovers and edited musical accompaniments.


Experience of designing and briefing soundscapes (not creating).


Proven ability to prepare creative concepts  in AV design for tender and pitch work


Proven ability to take peer and client feedback and update designs accordingly.


Proven ability to research artwork ideas and potential assets/ content as well as ability to manage project assets eg stills and film, with a commercial awareness of licensing companies and licensing. 


Creative flair with a passion for creating engaging design.


A demonstrable belief in quality control of work to both AY-PE and client standards, with a keen eye for detail: typos, jerky renders, misaligned edits don’t get past you!


Strong verbal and written communication skills.


Organised and efficient.


Good time management skills and the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously; delivering to time and budget.


Ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively.


Able to lead projects and collaborate with team.


Able to spot issues in production and proactive about resolving issues in production.


Up to date knowledge of the latest design trends.


Open communicator keeping team up to date with ideas, issues and changes to projects


Confident and friendly.


Understanding of inclusivity / access requirements in designing AV for visitors in a physical location (not just online) eg applying BSL, height of UI from floor, subtitling, visibility of graphics etc.


Flexible, positive, can-do attitude: adapting quickly and well to changing priorities.



Desirable (but not essential)


Understanding and experience working with the museums, heritage and attractions sectors in digital media/ AV software creation.


Experience working with / briefing / managing diverse and creative freelancers/ artist teams eg animators, illustrators.


Experience of organising and directing/ helping to run film shoots.


Understanding of projection mapping and how to adjust designs to suit.


Understanding of visitor interpretation and technical needs which impact the motion design for different AV outputs eg multi-projector 12 metre 7 minute film, or large database touchscreen interactive, or short looping small screen animation.

Hours and location

Anyone employed would be expected to work in our York studio, Monday – Friday 9am – 5:30pm.


A freelancer, hired on a project by project basis, may be considered for remote working but with a requirement to be agreed on how many days per week or month you could be in our York studio with us on a project by project basis.
