ENDEAVOUR IN CONFLICT

AY-PE have worked with Army Flying Museum on two separate, major AV projects over the last five years.

The first, to design, produce and deliver two new immersive large-scale AV shows, as well as ambient and set specific audio soundscapes, edited archive films and new oral history listening points. The goal was to reignite the mission of the museum - extending its appeal and expounding Army Flying's strengths in courage, comradeship and innovation.

The second, to transform a blank canvas space into an enthralling, multi-layered digital exploration of the Apache helicopter and crew stories, featuring large-scale interactives and a virtual reality experience of the craft itself. As well as AV software a full AV exhibition service  was deployed by AY-PE including experience design, gallery look and feel, graphic panel design and AV hardware.

A SHOW OF ACTION

‘Helicopters in Action’ is a large-scale, show-stopping film, 3D projection mapped across several helicopters and 24 metres of aviation hangar wall.

Telling the story of those helicopters and the people who worked with them, the original graphic designs, special effects, use of imagery, oral testimony and CGI all combine with a bespoke musical score and voiceover to leave visitors in awe of the life which surrounds these machines.

AWARENESS

'Soldiers in the Air' is a powerful introductory film. Combining edited, graded and coloured still and moving archive, with motion typography, graphics, voice-over and sound design, this 3 minute film gives the visitor a brief yet inspirational view of what Army flight is and its impact.

Our design is projected across multiple surfaces with the 4K film choreographed seamlessly between mini-films and a powerful, singular AV.

VIRTUAL REALITY

To convey the astounding size and presence of an Apache helicopter without having the real thing meant only one thing, virtual reality.

We designed an immersive hangar experience where the VR wearer can walk right up to an Apache, examine around it and interactively trigger hotspots of information. Designed for portability, the experience is also used on outreach visits, raising awareness of the museum, its mission and the epic scale of army flying.

SPEAK TO THE CREW

The visitor can ask their choice of questions to real, life-sized, army pilots and crew - giving an authentic, relatable, emotional, human connection between the storyteller and audience. AY-PE conceived of, filmed, edited, UI designed and programmed this, incorporating low height access, subtitles and audio, all to astound and inspire the viewer in the experiences of the very person ‘who was there’.

IMMERSIVE STORIES

Operating via UI designed with an engineering feel in mind, the 32” touchscreen table allows the visitor to explore carefully curated categories and subsections of statistics, film clips, interviews and oral testimonies – covering the technical, strategic and operational abilities of the Apache helicopter. The media content for the chosen topic projects onto a bespoke, 4 x 2 metre curved surface to immerse the visitor in their chosen information.

CURATOR,
ARMY FLYING MUSEUM

A real asset to the museum, thank you.

VISITOR FEEDBACK,
TRIPADVISOR

Everything was really brought to life by personal accounts. I particularly enjoyed getting to know the finer details of the apache helicopter through the new interactive display
