Opened March 2020 to acclaim, AY-PE’s digital production helped co-deliver the Silverstone Interactive Museum – a stunning multimedia driven, motorsports museum containing 86 digital media experiences – designed and created by AY-PE.

Creating the Silverstone Interactive Museum in a converted WWII hangar next to the world famous racetrack, AY-PE worked with Silverstone Heritage and exhibition designer Mather & Co to deliver vast galleries containing 86 interactive displays, digital experience and inspirational multimedia.

Legacy, innovation & inspiration

Project overview

Telling compelling stories of human endeavour, great sporting rivalries and engineering innovation, AY-PE filmed or worked with the archive of many of the legends who have created, supported or who have been racing legends over the last century.

Creatively developing displays to awe and educate in history, sports and STEM subjects, we worked across multiple areas of production – from beautiful animations to bespoke musical compositions. With interactive and multimedia displays which transport the visitor into the lesser known, more surprising parts of Silverstone’s history, as well as immersing them in the passion of racing itself.

EXPERIENCE TYPE 01

Large-scale immersive

A multi-projector immersive experience sweeping the visitor into a life-size starting grid which speeds past them – showing newly filmed footage and CGI of starting grids across 10 classic motorsports eras.

This immersive digital experience is accompanied by an enthralling bespoke music composition reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac’s iconic F1 related ‘The Chain’ yet developed to capture the spirit, life and passion of motorsports over the decades and soak the visitor in excitement and passion for the museum.

EXPERIENCE TYPE 02

Inspirational interactives

AY-PE designed and produced 14 digital interactives across dozens of touch screens, tables and walls including:

  • Build your own 500cc car and race it
  • Set a Moto GP bike for wet weather: suspension, brakes etc
  • Add your own racing commentary to iconic races
  • Race control decisions
  • Various digital explorers of car safety, strategy, testing etc

With the designing of the software incorporating prototyping, testing/ evaluation, 3D modelling, bespoke interface development and more.

EXPERIENCE STYLE 3

Films, interviews & presentations

Expert interviews and edits shown small to largescale across screens, wall projections and Pepper’s Ghost, including:

  • Motorbike & car engineering principles
  • Race strategy
  • Marshalling
  • Legendary bikes, cars and drivers (Jackie Stewart Pepper’s Ghost)

Incorporating AY-PE pre-production, scripting / interviews of experts, cinematography, sound engineering, post-editing and more.

EXPERIENCE STYLE 4

Edited archive

Archive footage, stills and movies: AY-PE graded, edited, graphic designed, animated and sequenced an array of films and montages across the exhibition – working sensitively with Silverstone, BRDC and other motorsport archives.

EXPERIENCE STYLE 5

Immersive audio

AY-PE created and balanced a multitude of soundscapes, bespoke composition, ambient sounds and SFX across The Silverstone Experience – evoking in the visitor the passion, atmosphere and variety of life behind this diverse motorsport centre. Audio pieces included:

  • 1948 Grand Prix full soundscape (accompanying film edit)
  • Ambient soundscape accompanying the timelapse film of the Heart of Silverstone – race day
  • Atmospheric Chapel soundscape evoking the older history of the site
  • Reflective soundscape accompanying the Wartime Memorial to those related to Silverstone who have lost their lives in war.
  • Bespoke sound effects to accompany many of the varied AV exhibits including Joy Riding (the prehistory of the race track) & Stained Glass (the Abbey which once stood before the track).

EXPERIENCE STYLE 6

Animations & Illustrations

The Silverstone Experience and its exhibition designer required a range of digital media styles to stimulate visitor interest and engagement – for all ages. Working with the exhibition style, the characterful nature of motorsports and an adventurous sense of STEM/ engineering, AY-PE produced animations and illustration for films, graphic treatments, touch screen interactives and gesture technology, including:

  • Large-scale race track interactive in the clean, STEM style feel of the museum branding
  • Several graphic novel style interactive screens showing the growth of racing in the 1940s
  • Illustrative, playful floor projected carp pond animations – interacting with the visitors as they stand on them.

"

Lots of interactive exhibits. Starts amazingly when you are on the grid and continues all the way around. Will definitely be returning
