CLIENT

ENGLISH HERITAGE

Working with English Heritage at their Battle Abbey site, AY-PE was commissioned to create innovative AV and apps in response to two prominent issues which EH had identified:

1. Regarding access for those with mobility constraints to inaccessible rooms – making a visit more open to all.

2. Finding a way to engage children more in exploring and uncovering stories about the Abbey – to use apps and tablets to prompt children into looking around, not looking down.

Virtual Access App

The virtual tour app was designed to make Battle Abbey’s exhibition rooms accessible to all – as several rooms are hard to reach for a number of visitors. With English Heritage, AY-PE storyboarded the tour and commissioned 360 panoramic recordings of the rooms and roof area, along with hi-resolution images of important artefacts and architectural points of interest. Working with the EH brand, AY-PE designed UI / UX, programmed and delivered this clear and intuitive to use, virtual access app.

TOUR / TRAIL 02

Engaging children

AY-PE designed a children’s app trail to encourage children to explore  Battle Abbey – with a Benedictine Monk as their guide. Using and testing with iBeacons, AY-PE developed a trail where animated monks would trigger onto screen and alert the child to nearby objects or other room-based challenges, giving fun, educational facts to the user about what they’d found.

Creative Learning

As a reward within the app trail, once a child has explored, found and discovered the Abbey’s shields and Coats of Arms, their device will launch into a fun activity where they can digitally design, ‘paint’ and keep their own heraldic shield.

Augmented Selfies

As a final reward for completing the trail, AY-PE developed software to augment the user’s selfie image with a 3D gargoyle-like ‘grotesque’ filter, based on the Abbey’s stonework. Different facial features can be played with and augmented, with the end design being a souvenir for the child to take home.
