CHOCOLATE KITCHEN PROJECTION SHOW

AY-PE transformed two of Hampton Court Palaces’ Chocolate Kitchen rooms into an immersive, experiential AV feast.

Having uncovered evidence that two of the Palace's smaller rooms had been 18th Century Chocolate Kitchens for the King, Historic Royal Palaces required an immersive interpretation for the Rooms, which would tell their stories, without interfering with the Grade I listed status of the Palace. In addition, as the rooms were so small and Hampton Court Palace visitor flow  very high, the solution needed to be a display which was visible, understandable and immediately engaging from the audience viewing point at the Chocolate Kitchen's door.

PREPARATION

Having collaborated with AV hardware Fusion LX over the possible placement and Listed building obstacles of the rooms, AY-PE developed two projection mapped shows. The first, places two life-sized characters (dressed as the famous chocolate chef Thomas Tosier and his kitchen boy) onto the walls of the kitchen, giving viewers the experience of a real life Georgian Chocolate kitchen.

The groundwork of this piece required meticulous reconstuctive planning, research and expert guidance from HRP for our dual camera, live action filming.

INTEGRATION

To marry with the Georgian aesthetic of the room and the chocolate drinking era, line-drawn illustration, animated visual-effects and motion typography  were created and blended into the graded and coloured footage. The ethereal, almost dreamlike sequence of the Chocolate Kitchen back to life, enthrals the viewer and explains the chocolate making process from start to finish.

PRESERVATION

The second room uses the same projection mapped technique, but highlights all the architectural features of the room and what each was used for.

The empty room could be authentically preserved, whilst the elegant, almost magical effects, trace the original items and activities back into the rooms, before the viewers’ eyes.
