Holocaust Survivors’ Friendship Association
PLB Ltd
‘Through Our Eyes’ is the lead exhibition at Holocaust Centre North. The exhibition focuses on the experiences of the survivors and families connected to the Holocaust Survivor’s Friendship Association (‘HSFA’).
We produced 2 x films and audio from edited archive including 3D Projection Mapping, 6 x touchscreens, 2 x ambient soundscapes, 2 x dynamic infographic map animations, 1 x digital Memorial Book and 1 x large-scale immersive audio-visual piece – beautiful in style yet heartbreaking in content.
Pre-war projection wall
AY-PE sensitively graded, coloured and edited HFSA’s archive – delivering a cohesive, warm sense of community life across a wall of 3D projection mapped pictures and films. The mock-picture frames shift between static and moving imagery both individually and collectively shown. An ambient soundscape of laughter, child noises and joyful Jewish songs accompanies.
Infographic Maps
We created two animated infographic maps displays showing changing borders, Jewish population movement, camps and more. The colouring, style and movement of the maps was intricately designed to match the contemporary look and emotional /personal feel of the exhibition as a whole.
Edited archive
Our editing of archive films and sounds relating to the rise of anti-semitism is unnerving with ominous, ambient sounds of feet marching or glass smashing. Across several screens and speakers the visitor learns about the actions of the time and gains a personal sense of tension and ill-ease as the persecution rises.
Immersive film & soundscape
AY-PE created a large-scale immersive film and soundscape – drawing together exhibition themes, questions and feelings.
Building from and incorporating survivor oral testimony we produced a thought-provoking, emotionally powerful, creatively artistic film.
Intended to make the visitor feel unsettled, even uncomfortable, the film is 3D mapped against four walls. Sometimes all play, sometimes only individual walls – building a sense of disorientation and concern.
We commissioned WMP Studios to compose a new score to match the context of the exhibition, the style of Jewish music and the thematic, unsettling nature of this film. The AV blend immerses the viewer in overwhelming thought and emotion – a sensation which endures after they’ve left the exhibition.
