TELLING THE EXTRAORDINARY
AY-PE designed and produced several galleries of audio visual (AV) media as part of the multi-million pound refurbishment project for the D-Day Story museum in Portsmouth.

The only museum in the UK dedicated to the Allied Invasion in June 1944 it is based on ordinary people working together to achieve the extraordinary. TOP SECRET BRIEFING
This full length AV projection shows a British Brigadier unveiling the plan, as if he were in front of a room of top officials, with a 1940s style slide-deck appearing across him. We worked with experts to gain the correct military information and look whilst condensing a wealth of information into a punchy, accessible script - filmed, then blended with archive footage. Visitors are immediately immersed in context, urgency and time.
PREPARATION
'Preparation' AV is a powerful life-size film showing six characters 24 hours before D-Day each with a different role eg. Allied, German, decision maker, meteorologist.
4K filmed on chroma-key with post-editing to recreate a variety of camps, the projected film is set into a dark, ominous, canvas setwork, as if the audience is waiting on the army camp too. The visitor gains knowledge, a multi-national perspective and a sense of trepidation.
EMOTIVE 'HOLOGRAM'
Bringing soldiers' emotions to life, 'holographic' life-size troops are seen crouched inside a real Landing Craft (by Pepper's Ghost). Scripted from soldier soldier/ veteran accounts, the audience hears their hidden thoughts and fears on the imminent landing. A moving soundscape adds to the immersion, with viewer and soldiers both emotively reacting together to the sea and other ship noises seemingly going by.
EPIC PROJECTION
A large-scale AV projected across eight metres of wall this motion graphic film sweeps through time, maps, locations, accounts and action over D-Day. As the backdrop to five x table-top, scale models of the key D-Day beaches, it contains a wealth of world-wide activity and of deep personal impact.

Working with experts we condensed hour-by-hour information from across the beaches into bite sized chunks - delivering key facts against graded and treated archive, new live action film, infographic maps and narrated quotes from those who were there.
YOU DECIDE
A virtual board-game of tactics and route planning, a decision-making interactive exploring the innovative landing vehicles made by Hobart and digital spy software where the user decides what information to believe or not in the planning of events. Our varied digital interactives put the visitor in the shoes of decision-making roles for D-Day, learning by taking responsibility for actions and consequences.
