SYSCO

AY-PE designed and produced several galleries of audio visual (AV) media as part of the multi-million pound refurbishment project for the D-Day Story museum in Portsmouth.

The only museum in the UK dedicated to the Allied Invasion in June 1944 it is based on ordinary people working together to achieve the extraordinary. Telling the unique personal stories behind this epic event, AY-PE designed and produced 12x exhibits including 5x Interactives and 7 x large scale AVs, helping to submerge the visitor in the feelings, emotions and legacy of D-Day.

Exhibit 01

The Plan

This full length AV projection shows a British Brigadier unveiling the plan. We worked with experts to gain the correct military information and look whilst condensing a wealth of information into a punchy, accessible script – filmed, then blended with archive footage. Visitors are immediately immersed in context, urgency and time.

Experience 02

Preparation for D-Day

A powerful life-size film showing 6 characters 24 hours before D-Day each with a different role – Allied, German, decision maker, meteorologist etc.
4K filmed on Chroma Key with post-editing to recreate a variety of camps, the visitor gains knowledge, a multi-national perspective and a sense of trepidation.

Experience 03

Landing Craft

Bringing soldiers’ emotions to life – life-size troops are seen crouched inside a real LCTV (by Pepper’s Ghost) – talking about their feelings on the imminent landing. AY-PE scripted, filmed, post-edited and soundscaped this to draw visitors into the events, crafts and stories of the Landings.

Experience 03

Landing Craft

AY-PE studied soldier/ veteran accounts so the visitor hears the person’s hidden thoughts in an authentic script. Our moving soundscape adds to the immersion with other craft and sea noises, all of which the soldiers and visitors hear and react to simultaneously – a joint experience.

EXHIBIT 04

LANDINGS

A large-scale AV – the backdrop to 5x table-top, scale models of the 5 D-Day beaches.

Working with experts we condensed hour-by-hour information from across the beaches into bite sized chunks – delivering key facts against graded and treated archive, new live action film, infographic maps and narrated quotes from the men who were there in the thick of it.

Stand out features: landing craft, interactive screens & the way they told the soldiers stories.

Exhibit 05

INTERACTIVES

Experience in Battle is a virtual board game where users get to decide what tactic, kit or men they need to overcome a obstacle.

Exhibit 05

INTERACTIVES

Sir Stanley Hobart developed ‘funny looking’ armoured vehicles for specific battle situations and tactics. Users explore several vehicle types and then decide which armoured vehicle will work best in which battle scenarios.

Exhibit 05

INTERACTIVES

Misinformation was spread deliberately by Allied wartime  spy-masters to deceive the enemy as to their invasion plans.  The user has to determine whether the information is fact or fiction.

"

Stunning imagery, AV & hands-on interactives which help to bring the story to life.
