DESIGNERS

AY-PE

AY-PE was commissioned by The Canal & River Trust to produce a historical documentary film about the relatively unknown character of Samuel Oldknow, Britain’s biggest Muslin manufacturer in the 18th Century.

The Canal & River Trust wanted the local community to be inspired by this forgotten history – taking Oldknow’s story and waterway innovation to their hearts. Following consultation with the community AY-PE developed, filmed and edited a feature-film adaptable to website, DVD/ USB, tour guide and full-scale cinema-screen delivery.

Consultation

The focus

This was a community project so we held public consultations from the start. Gathering feedback for the film’s concept, characters and visual treatment, AY-PE ensured that the piece would be both creative and fitting to the community. The project only went ahead once the locality agreed on the idea.

Production

The drama

The film is set in an 18th century law court with key figures giving evidence for Oldknow’s historical importance. All aspects of this drama were developed by AY-PE. Shot in 4K, the film was edited and graded to give a rich quality feel whilst being relatable in nature. A bespoke soundtrack by WMP completes this engaging high-quality drama.

Presenter

The opinion

Contemporary views are given throughout by Industrial Revolution expert Prof. Emma Griffin. Prof. Griffin takes the viewer through a historical and geographical journey of Oldknow’s life – appearing in a variety of locations. AY-PE collaborated with historians for accuracy, local understanding and engaging content delivery.

Reconstruction

The Mill

A highly detailed 3D model of the Mill and its locality is woven into the live footage. AY-PE worked closely with experts, Lidar data, groundworks and archive prints to produce an accurate model with working machinery inside. The models give insight into a lost world, a modern feel and a change of presentation to keep the viewer enthralled.
