Event

Canterbury Cathedral’s ‘The Canterbury Journey’ was a £25m programme to conserve the world famous Cathedral whilst enriching the visitor experience. As part of the project, AY-PE designed a varied range of films, edits, animations, touchscreen interactives and 3D modelled CGI reconstructions.

The nine bespoke exhibits are designed to enhance the visitor’s journey through the layered themes of the Cathedral, to deepen visitor understanding of the Cathedral’s life and to deliver content and stories – inspiring visitors of any background or faith.

EXPERIENCE TYPE 01

Animated floor projection

A 4-minute animated sequence, projected onto the 12th century flagstone floor of the Water Tower. Taking inspiration from the illuminated manuscripts of the time and working with the circular projection space of the Tower floor, AY-PE created a beautiful, kaleidoscopic animated illustration of flowing water surrounding and supporting ever-changing monk life. A meditative, ambient audio accompanies.

EXPERIENCE TYPE 02

Interpretive Films

AY-PE produced, filmed, scripted and edited looping, elegant 4k films of experts working with two historic items. Created with a macro close-up style, shallow depth of field and colour graded to add classic rich tones with a modern feel, the film screens blend with the beauty of the Water Tower itself. Additional subtitles, text screens and visual effects were added to complete the visitor’s understanding of the objects displayed nearby.

EXPERIENCE TYPE 03

INTERACTIVE TOUCHSCREENS

Working with client researchers, we designed and created a range of evolving 3D models of the Cathedral to highlight its changes over the centuries. A swipeable and clickable interface allows the visitor to flow through the architectural time periods and engage with historic information about it.

EXPERIENCE TYPE 03

INTERACTIVE TOUCHSCREENS

AY-PE also created a touchscreen with thematic coloured segments – for the visitor to press and discover the Cathedral-created video clips within. Working with and editing the Cathedral’s clips to a consistent look and feel we delivered gracefully sliding, pop-out and expandable screens to deliver both filmic and textual content – again giving the visitor autonomy over their choice of content and experience.

EXPERIENCE TYPE 04

Welcome Screens

The Canterbury Journey is divided into four themes, corresponding colours and messages. Working with these elements, AY-PE created looping films about diverse Cathedral life, shown across 6 portrait screens along the Welcome Centre walls – drawing visitors into the exhibition. Filmed and edited in a close-up, soft yet vibrant videographic style – the dynamic yet respectful natures of the Cathedral are brought to life.
